menufonts

MenuFonts was one of the earliest Utilities released for the original Macintosh 128k computer by Apple, Inc.

Beyond, Inc.
1985

It was the first time that a Font menu dropdown was drawn WYSIWYG using the actual typefaces instead of the Chicago font (as was done in Apple’s Font menu in the Operating System). It was accomplished by patching the Mac Toolbox routine that drew the menu itself at runtime, dynamically creating the dropdown with only the installed fonts on that particular system).

PERSONAL NOTE: Of all the things I’ve designed, this is probably the best example of simplicity and clarity. It’s perfect just like it is – nothing more is needed, and nothing can be take away.
